James Banner was born in Dudley, England and is now based in Berlin and the UK, working as an improvising musician and composer between genres and art forms. He has performed with diverse artists such as singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni, artist Paula Doepfner and the award-winning artist duo Quadrature. Currently, leading his own ensemble USINE, co-curating a monthly series at Berlin’s Donau115 with Practically Married, as well as developing collaborative projects are at the forefront of his creative output. He is in demand as a sideman in jazz and improvised music ensembles in Berlin, as well as a soloist in short-term collaborations such as at Leipziger Jazztage 2018 and Jazz Alloy at the Vortex in 2019, and his music has been supported by Initiative Musik, UdK/HfM Hanns Eisler Berlin, The Berlin State and Making Music. Passionate about outreach and education, James is also a Lecturer at Leeds College of Music, and works as a workshop facilitator with Jazzlines (THSH Birmingham) and Make The Paint Dance (Leeds).
